X17 Notebooks - from Germany

Depending on the material of paper you use, you think differently, so an X17 notebook will open up your creative side with three different formats of booklet inserts.

Developed in Germany as an alternative to the traditional ring-style notebook. The goal was to design a notebook that wasn't too bulky, that wasn't too thick, and that would allow you to freely write on the left-hand side of the page.

X17 uses a book-by-book system, which means it uses bound insert booklets rather than loose-leaf insert pages. Strong and flexible rubber band rings hold these insert booklets perfectly in place along the binding side of each X17 notebook.

Each X17 notebook holds three booklets - one plain, one lined and one graph ruled. We stock seven different insert notebooks, so you can make your notebook as flexible as you need:
  • Plain paper for sketches
  • Ruled paper for notes
  • Graph paper
  • Dot Grid ruled paper
  • Stave lines for music
  • Address register A-Z
  • Data register (1-12)

The different formats allow you to use X17 in an unlimited variety. Here are some of the ideas we've seen:
  • Personal planner
  • Notebook
  • Diary
  • Bullet journal
  • Idea notebook
  • Appointment planner
  • Time planner
  • Calendar
  • Household notebook
  • Teacher's calendar
  • Address book
  • Hiking/Backpacking journal
  • Traveling journal
  • Personal organizer

Vegetable Tanned Leather from Belgium

The pure leather used in X17 notebooks is vegetable tanned leather from Belgium and is 2.2 mm to 2.5 mm thickness made from the upper layer of the hide. Hedgerow cracks and minor injuries are visible as well as lesions caused by insects.

Bonded Leather

In the production of leather (splitting, cleaving, grinding, etc.) a large amount of leather fiber remains. These fibers are mixed with natural binding materials, latex, plasticizers, tannins and manufactured into an ingenious material: bonded leather. The leather fibers are matted by additives resulting in a very consistent material. The characteristics of the leather is substantially retained and the price is much more attractive.

This bonded leather is coated to give it good resistance to abrasion. Coated bonded leather is commonly used in the furniture industry. X17 also uses uncoated bonded leather. Uncoated bonded leather has a wonderful feel and also absorbs moisture from your hands. It is often used in the shoe industry.

Texon (vegan - cellulose fiber)

Texon is X17's vegan product. It is made of cellulose fiber, which is also used in paper production, and caoutchouc (natural rubber). Texon has a great combination of different qualities: it is light, washable and solid, it has a perfect grip and absorbs moisture. It is difficult to tear and can be processed similar to leather and bonded leather. Texon is used in the footwear industry.

X17 grants a 17-year guarantee on their book covers. Should any leather cover crack or break, X17 will exchange that cover (that is handled directly by X17 - they are very interested in hearing about any possible material weaknesses so that they can continuously improve their product).
Changing the booklets

The booklets are bound into the notebook by an elastic band (the elastix). The secret to changing the booklet without damaging the paper is to first draw the elastix generously over the booklet and then remove the booklet. If you try to pull out the booklet under the elastix, you will probably wrinkle the paper.

The elastic band itself is made from material used for many years in the automotive industry as a sealing ring, so it is a proven long-lasting material with high elastic retention value.

  1. I'm excited about these! Will the Texon notebook come in the larger of the two sizes? Any idea what the price point will be for those and the replacement booklets? I would like to change over to this system but have found the traditional Travelers notebooks to be a little too narrow for my liking. This looks like the perfect solution. Excited to see these! :)

    1. Hi, the Texon notebooks come in both the smaller and larger sizes. Those will be available in stone or black colors, and are priced the same as the bonded leather. The replacement booklets will be available on our website by tomorrow morning at the latest (Friday, April 20th). The booklets sell for $9 (small) and $16 (large) each for a pack of 2. Thanks for the response. We're excited about these too!

  2. So, you're copying the Midori style notebooks from Japan, et alia. Or, at least, the Germans are.
